The first new Summit track: around the Keyhole Corner.

This track is very nearly finished to a reasonable rideable standard.. although there are a few rocky outcrops to deal with. We will be going back to smash them to bits with some machinery.

While these rocks are still in place parts of the track will be not as wide as they should be- however with a little care riders (and walkers and runners!) can get past them.

And so to the “keyhole” corner on Zacs, which is the spot where the two tracks meet. Rather than simply join at the first available space we will be setting the new track around the outside of this bend, so all riders in both directions have clear sight lines.

This little bit extra on the end will be a lot of work due to the large rocks and fill required. We may need to use some retaining, and it will add at least one whole day’s digging to this track when we have two more to build. Not an easy thing to contemplate, and well done to the guys for tackling the extra work today and not lynching me :-)

Huge thanks go to Stefan, Colin, Luke, James and Rob for their efforts !

And now, dear readers, a map to show where we are at, and how it fits in with the planet:

Aratihi is marked in yellow, the track we are finalising now is shown in green and Zac’s track is in black.

The next section we will be building is in red.

As you can see, once this red track is done there will be a much longer alternative to the top part of Zacs, as it will sweep past the road by Aratihi. It will also mean that riders can climb from Aratihi to the summit on a MTB trail (hopefully out of the wind) rather than using the vehicle access road.

We can then set out building the track shown in blue, which runs from the summit to meet North Face. We will be working very hard to build it in the style of JFK- where flow and fun are priorities. This third track will swoop up and down and dive about creating a fantastic first section to the very long intermediate ride from the summit of Makara Peak all the way down to the Karori Stream car park.

And so to some photos of today’s dig....

Riders negotiate the current keyhole corner on Zac's :

Here is the exit of that corner, with Colin and James working on the new section:

And here is the work being done around the outside of the keyhole with Stefan and James hacking away at the very thick grass..

We unearth all kinds of wierd things building tracks, and this one has provided us with a few golf balls. Perhaps somebody has been practicing whacking these things from the summit?

Luke prepares his tee shot, using the highly sought after grubber handle as a club:

I missed the impact however he showed great form and tremendous distance.

Bye bye golf ball!

Meanwhile back on the new track.. here I present one of those (very hard) rocky bits..we spent some time making the narrow track next to it nice and solid. One day that rock will be gone.

And a little further along is where the track benching was being created, where barberry once battled the elements:

And here the track heads out into the open, around the outside of the keyhole corner on Zac's track.

And from there the track will swing around the bend to join Zac's just after the corner. There are a few large rocks and some fill required here so it will be a big effort to get this done!

Although the photos just show grass and a bit of dirt, this fluffy wiry stuff is like very thick heavy matting, and it takes a huge amount of effort to remove.

Here I am standing on a flat rock, about 30 cm above the ground:

Will we run the track over this rock, and therefore need heaps of fill on either side? (probably!!) or, shall we run the track below (much easier to build) which will then make a steeper pinch up to Zac's ?? (not so good). With each new track these kinds of decisions every few metres.

Cheers,

Stymied by the weather!

Yesterday morning started as evil nasty weather, which meant sensible people stayed where they woke.
I wandered up and spent an hour or so cutting back barberry and digging a small hole, before I was advised that working alone in that slime was not very sensible!

I bailed out, and of course, it fined up and Colin spent many hours chipping rock, with the strength and persistance that only Colin can muster. Gordon also put in hours of good work while I dried out at home and stuck my boots above the heater!

Cheers guys.. We will be back next weekend .

Rob

Makara Peak Tracks !!

p.s. I have wanted to use "stymied" for so long...
Aratihi to Zac's ( or vice versa) is almost through !

New Summit Track #1, almost through to Zac’s !

Cheers to Gordon, James, Luke, Sarah, Colin, Stefan and Rob for their work last Saturday- this track is almost built all the way to where it joins Zac’s Track. It was a nice day with the standard sensational views, even getting warmish in the late afternoon.

A few rocky parts need to be attacked with picks, and I am sure we will be tinkering with the details until this track is 100% lovely.

I suspect some very gentle rollers for drainage may appear, but nothing too radical as this is a two way track.

On the day a few people riding the tight “keyhole” corner on Zac’s realised that something was going on, and they stopped to look over their shoulders. And there lay (most of) a track!

Luke managed to test ride it all (including a small drop scrabble through some cut gorse) however if you are taking a look over the next few days, expect to take your bike for a walk for a couple of metres.

We will be back on Saturday 28th, and if we have lots of hands on deck, the track should be pretty much ridable. Once that is done we can concentrate on making it as nice, and as solid, as it can be :D

I took some photos after we had packed up, so unfortunately the hard workers cannot be seen..

Here the flat surface, or bench, has been widened, and the soft vegetation and rubbish shifted downhill:

A little further along ( where you can see the yellow handled grubber) the track currently narrows due to a large rock being in the way. We will attack this with picks although dynamite would be more fun..

And below you can see that this part of the track is quite straight. It is actually slightly downhill ( heading from Aratihi to Zacs), although the photo does not show this clearly:

And from here the great progress sort of stops. We have the usual barberry made of kryptonite, followed by a small dip, then about 6m more of solid baberry. The track will run above the dip, and plow headlong through the scrub which is after all an introduced pest...

There is a temporaray hole in the barberry below the track route at the moment for people to wander through if they wish :-)

And here is where the track ends up.. linking Aratihi to Zacs ! or, the other way around.

So great progress was made, and the Makara Peak Supporters will be running another work party this coming Saturday, 28th April.

For all the details, please have a look out our coming events calendar :

Track Number 1 heads towards it's final destination ..

Last Tuesday was of course another Summit Tracks Dig Evening, with fine pizzas generously supplied by The Karori Recreation Cafe.

Physical labour was produced by a gang of 13 keen volunteers who dug, scraped, built, flung and clambered through stuff.

As you can see, great progress is being made and this can be viewed from just over the side of the road by the summit.

I would think that the track will be ridable within a month, although not finished to the usual Welly Track standards. That will happen over the next few months as it packs down and is refined and shaped.

If you have not come along to a Tuesday night session, you are running out of time- so give it a go!

Heaps of nice food, tools safety gear all supplied by the Makara Peak Supporters.

Here are a bunch of photos of the evening:

Swinging the nice new sharp grubbers..

Unpacking the PIZZAS !!

A happy worker in the pectacular evening sun..

creating the riding bench..

As you can see, we are just below the summit. Cool shades!

Investigating the bit at the end..

Here work is happenning all the way past the rocky area...

A Barberry is about to meet its maker and become compost..

Makara Peak cowers in fear as the grubber strikes again!

An unhappy Wheta !

Packing up and heading home. it was dark 20 minutes later.

And thanks once again to:

We are not far from sorting out the next track, and getting that underway. As daylight savings ( and the evening work parties) end in a few weeks, the next track will be built on weekends.

There are actually two more to be built, of about 210 metres and 420 metres, which should keep us busy through the winter. Track building is usually easier in the cooler weather (less over heating!!) and damp soil is easier to dig and to pack down.

Interesting times, and the tracks at Makara Peak take another big step forward

Cheers,

Rob

Makara Peak Tracks !

CKS !!

Track number one gets longer: Bridges and Rock Walls

The intrepid trail diggers were up by the Summit of Makara Peak on a windy evening, however it did not rain and there was even some sun!

Meanwhile, we built a rock bridge over a pipe (think English country-side only with no river, lower edges, and in a different country), made more benched (flat) track, cleared a heap more scrub and investigated the Dreaded Rocky Area.

Cheers to Gordon, Rob, Nicholas, Bryan, James, Lyn and Linden for their work this evening. :D

The rock bridge used up a huge quantity of rocks, exhausting our large rock pile, and dirt was packed into the surface. It may settle a little at first, however the foundations are good!

Here is James digging beyond the rock bridge:

Further along the track was hacked into the hill, where the embankment was mostly small rocks. Quite wierd after building so many tracks of clay or into rocks the size of Volkswagens.

Gordon gets even :

It may be a challenge to find enough dirt to pack all those rocks down into a smoothish riding surface, however more will be revealed as we clear further along.

There was much investigation around the Dreaded Rocky Area, and it may be that we can skirt it entirely, (just) however that depends what further clearing unearths next week. Tension mounts.

Where's Bryan??

If you have not seen this track I do encourage you to wander down and have a ride. It is not beautifully landscaped just yet, however it is just fine to ride until you meet with an upturned wheelbarrow.

There are about 5 more evenings to go before Daylight Saving disappears, so if you have not come along to have a dig why not give it a go..

Pizzas supplied by those nice people at the Karori Sportground Cafe, tools by Makara Peak Supporters !

We will be back (unless the weather is evil) next Tuesday, see you there!

Cheers,

Rob

New Summit Track Numbr one is more than half done !

This first summit track is over half way done with impressive progress being made last Tuesday.

Huge thanks to Mark, Bryan, Gareth, Lyn, Linden and Rob for coming along and making this happen!

The track was “ benched” (a wide flat riding surface) where it had been cleared, and a lot more clearing was done. Barberries were flung over the side, and rocks were rolled about.

Working around the native trees and quite a few ferns means that this track is going to be a nice undulating, interesting place to ride! Some of the vegetation is taller than you might expect, so hopefully the track will be quite sheltered from the local gales at least in the valley.

One part of the track was covered with decent sized rocks (a handy feature of building tracks below road cuttings!) and these were used to cover a storm-water pipe that runs down from above, and a lot of scrub was cleared over the next 50 metres.

Around that distant point lies what appeared to be a huge rock face- however some clearing revealed a far smaller version. This will morph into a swervy roller one day.

So small rock face aside, the rate of new track per hour of digging will speed up soon, as we head into an area with less of the evil wiry scrub.

Meanwhile the part already built is a cool track to ride, and prospects are looking great for when this link from Aratihi to Zacs is completed :-)

We will be back this coming Tuesday, and should you drop by between 5 and 8 ish you will see us there.

Looking over the left hand side of the road near the summit will give you a clear view of what has been going on!

You may even smell the Pizza, provided by......

Cheers,

Rob

Summit Tracks: update and work party tomorrow, Tuesday 14th !

Hello Thrillseekers, time for an update on the Summit Tacks Project at Makara Peak.

What is this ?

Three new tracks that all run to or from, the Makara Peak Summit.

Where will they be?

The first, under construction now, is from Aratihi to Zacs Track.

This will be about 210 m long, and it is an undulating track which goes slightly downhill. This track will meet Zacs at the “keyhole” corner and will be two-way.

Most of this track will be out of the gale force breezes that we sometimes see in the area.

Here it is shown in green with the existing start at point A.

We are about half way along.

Another will be from the summit down to the start of this one, or Aratihi to the Summit avoiding the road, depending on direction. This will be about the same gradient as the top parts of Aratihi, and will be 120 -150m long . Once again this will be a fun undulating track, mostly out of the wind, running across yhe side of a steep valley.

Here is a map with the two tracks shown in green:

The third track is from the summit to North Face. This will be an intermediate track which will be about the same gradient as North Face.

The result will be that Makara Peak has an intermediate all weather track to North Face for the first time.

The character will be like JFK (the bit off the end of North Face) but only 50% steeper. Expect lots of swoops, big berms and massive fun for all skill levels.

This track will be about 420m long. Once this is done, the summit tracks will look like this:

The order of construction after the first one is yet to be determined.

So once these are all completed there will be more options to ride, and also the grind to the summit from Aratihi especially will be far nicer.. and safer as you will be avoiding the service road.

The ability to cut across from Aratihi directly to Zacs will be a great option for those wanting to avoid evil weather or to save time.

These tracks are of course built by volunteers, and we have been chipping away on Tuesday evenings. Please come along and have a go!

We will be up there tomorrow, Tuesday 14th, and if the weather is a bit dodgy we will dress for the occasion and laugh at it.

And here are some pics of the construction:

Great for the upper body!

Nice new sharp grubbers!

A bit of a break:

A snail:

A critter:

A corner !

The track heads into the scrubbage..

We found some rocks.

Nom nom nom

Pizza will be provided by our friends at the Karori Park Cafe:

Drop by for a snack and a coffee after your rides , they are open until 5pm!

Nice new sharp tools and safety gear provided by the Makara Peak Supporters (with a lot of help from the WCC!)

Great views are as always supplied by Makara Peak itself.

You are nearly 400m above sea level and on a fine day you can see for “bloody miles”

The Tuesday evenings kick off from a little after 5, so drop by when you can, make a little track, socialize, eat pizza. Good times !

Cheers,

Rob

Summit Track No1 around the ridge and beyond.. great progress !

On a post card perfect evening more of this new track was built where just gorse and barberry had lived before.

A huge thanks to those who came along and got stuck into the lopping, digging and benching work :

Mark, Ian, Gordon, Mark, Aidan, John, Linden, Lyn, Edmund, Chris, Kirsty, Claire, and Rob! Legends all.

Many of them rode up Aratihi then hacked away at things which is very impressive. I usually need a nap or anaesthetic of life threatening levels after climbing that track.

The scrub was trimmed with loppers, then dug up with the lovely new sharp-as forged steel grubbers!

Stuff being made :-)

Pizzas were once again were donated by the kind folks at Karori Recreation Cafe, and they provided the energy needed to machine our way through the wiry scrub that tries to live on the side of this hill.

Drop in and see them after your ride at Makara Peak !

Doing the paperwork..

Brutalizing a poor defenceless barberry. If you discount it's prickly evilness.
This exercise is terrific for anger management.

A win, and the entire team are now as docile as sleeping puppies.

The chain gang, freshly fed, performing wonders.

Look at that lovely riding bench appearing..all the vegetation is removed so that the track is just soil or rock. This ensures that the track will pack down and dry out properly.

The track is now 80% bult for about 85 of its eventual 210 metres, which is good going. This is shown by the red line on the map below.

Please be aware of the fragile edges and the occasional rocky outcrop if you choose to walk/ run/ wobble along this track while it is under construction.

One unusual addition to the evening was the appearance of two Motorcycle riders on dirt bikes, who barped their way by then down the snake charmer. A little scouting failed to see them until they got a little stuck trying to ride up the gully to the Summit.

Mark H. had a little chat to them and from that moment on they seemed more than happy to wander off home - except they were vague about where that was, and how they had gotten into the Park itself. Declining polite and genuine offers for pizza in exchange for a little maual labour, they were next seen way down below negotiating gates and fences.

The creation process continued, and already we can see what a fun little track this is going to be. Downhill from Aratihi to Zacs, it will provide a nice rest for those wanting to detour around the summit itself.

The plan is to return next Tuesday night, and each Tuesday after until we reach reach Zacs.

Detail work will be done on weekends to polish it from a rough diamond into a... diamond.

See you next Tuesday.. or this Sunday on JFK!

Cheers

Rob

Makara Peak Tracks !

The first Summit track reaches the Ridge :-)

On Tuesday a band of diggers worked away high above Wellington, spending a few hours of their evening to help create a new track :D

This is only the third dig for this first new track of three by the Summit..

They gradually worked their way through the steep, rocky hill and made great progress !

Well done to Bryan, Gordon, Mark, Gareth, Jono, Martin, James and Nick :-)

Pictures are worth a thousand words, so here is a brief essay:

The gang at work..look at all of that nice fresh dirt !

Here you can see the scrub being gradually transformed into a perfectly nice track
The scrub is first cleared away, taking care to avoid any significant natives, then all of the plant and grass matter is removed.

Anything that can rot is removed. To leave it there would make a soggy horrible track that collapsed. So the surface is scraped clean.

Then the actual " bench" or flat path is created....

And then PIZZA for the tired workers- they have earned it !

Thank you again to those great folks at:

For their kind donation each week :-)

They make awesome pre or post iced coffees !

Mmmm juicy pizza.

Then, back to work as the hill is waiting...

And another barberry bites the dust ! The scrub is quite stunted up here but it remains very tough and wiry..

And now the track looks a lot like this. Remarkably like the CAD rendering in the previous blog !!

Digs will continue on Tuesday nights, although perhaps next Tuesday (Dec 27) might depend on who is in town.

Please contact us if you are keen, and we shall again ascend to the digging area

cheers,
The Summit in the Sun: Tuesday evening, December 20

Take a break from the compllications of Xmas for a few hours, and get some fun exercise in the company of other keen rtrack building people!

We will be meeting just down from the Summit, pretty much opposite the end of Aratihi..at point A

The fun starts around 5, and we would be packing up around 8.30...the sunset should be pretty good up there!

If you have not been along to a track building session, do not be shy- they are great fun and you will be provided with gloves and some tools to use.. along with some great advice on how best to use them in making new tracks.

A feed is provided for you, which includes freshly made Pizza, donated by
those great people at the Cafe by the Karori Cricket Club:

We usually pack up close to dark, so if you are riding in, bring your lights and
enjoy a blast down from the peak afterwards!!

Cheers,
Finishing off the Tuesday night’s works

Today we set out on this new track to build on the start, which was begun on Tuesday 29th November. Last Tuesday was wet and miserable, so that evening’s dig was cancelled.

We cut the embankment back, did a whole heap of widening and attacked some barberry then threw it over the side for compost.

The grassy edge was removed and replaced with plenty of rocks.

The local ground in quite weird, with a very thin layer of dirt under the grass, then a thick layer of large pebble rocks, with very fine roots from the grass going about 30 cm down. Not much clay at all. And the odd seam of solid rock!

Some of the rock was chipped away today as an anger management strategy, however when we strike large lumps of the stuff (and I am sure there will be plenty of it on this track) we will be stepping over it and continuing to build the track as if the rock was not there- and we will come back later with a Kango hammer and smash it to bits which sounds like fun!

By the look of the terrain I reckon this track will end up undulating up and down in a similar way to JFK which is a really nice way to have a track. It is a fair bit flatter than JFK and will therefore be slower and with good visibility to spot any other riders as it will be two way.

We slowly roasted in the sun today, however I think we felt better than those who had just climbed up Aratihi and were winching their way to the summit via the steep 4wd road close by. More on that one later !!

Cheers to Colin, Gareth (who came along for the first time and helped out enormously), Mark, Ian, Lewis, Rob and the unknown soldier who dropped in.

Anyway here are some pictures, taken about 5m from the start of the track, which is across the road from Aratihi just a little way up the road to avoid the embankment.

Here is Gareth, the very first rider on this track, at the end of the fully built section, about to ride back up. Not quite sure what he is doing with that peg. Jousting perhaps?

Next up is a view of the edge of the track which better shows the undulations:

And here is a view looking back to the start. As you can see the grassy edges have gone..and there are those small rocks!

And here is a larger rocky area, actually made of kryptonite. The Super Kango will prevail.

This is where is all ends, no more benching with a nice edge any more!. The track will drop a little into the turn then rise a little towards the next ridge.

And last and least is this very hi tech CAD render showing the next 30 m of track.

The next Tuesday evening dig will be December 13 on KORU with the Revolve Women’s group, and we will be returning to this Summit track the week after,

Cheers

Rob

Summer on the Summit, New Track number 1, dig day number one !

Tuesday 29th was our first evening dig day for this summer, and work began on number 1 of three new tracks by the summit of Makara Peak.

This first track links Aratihi to Zac’s track- or the other way around, as it can be used in either direction.

The tracks starts at point A.

The track path had been mapped, studied in relation to the other summit tracks, measured with GPS, examined with Google Earth, marked with pink tape, and pegged out. In other words - prepared earlier!

Most of the area is covered by wiry gorse and barberry, however this track will weave through some ferns, which is very cool. There are no sizable trees in the area.

Plans are being hatched for regenerating the former native bush with appropriate greenery, which will be planted this winter.

So here are most of the gang creating a spot to ride on, using Makara Peak Supporters' tools...

and being fed by the Cafe at nearby Karori Park, who are generously donating PIZZA for our Tuesday evening track workers.

This is a great place for hungry Makara Peak riders to stop in for a feed and a drink !

So please support them as they really are making an important contribution to our Park for all :-)

This track runs on a slight but noticeable 3% downslope from Aratihi to Zac’s track. Or, upslope going the other way.

To put this into perspective, Aratihi starts at 10% and goes to 7%, JFK averages just 5 %.

So it will be an easy climb, or a fun descent with velocities being mainly determined by the prevailing wind on the day.

You can see in the next photo the initial stages of building a track.

The surface vegetation is cleared only where the track is set to go, then a “bench” or flattish riding area is dug. This means removing all the vegetation

( which would otherwise rots and store water) until the track is 100% soil and/or rock. The gorse and barberry removed eventually breaks down and becomes part of the local environment as compost!

Failure to remove all the vegetation (including from the edge) resuls in a soggy trail that always collapses, or stores water in the middle, and gets grown over.

So getting it right first time saves a massive amount of fixing up later on, especially in the wet seasons.

The track will have a gentle fun rolling aspect to assist with drainage, and to make it simply nice to ride.

Random weaving about to avoid native trees and a corridor between some ferns will also be a feature. What else would you expect at Makara Peak ?

The evening was fine, and a big thank-you goes to James, Bryan, Jono, Gordon, and Martin for their efforts !!

What’s next? Summer on the Summit, each Tuesday !

Cheers,

It begins: Zacs to Aratihi

Today the 200m long track from Zac's Track to Aratihi (or vice versa, as it will be two way) was pegged out along the lines of the surveys in the recent past.

Cheers to Bryan, Ian and Rob for braving the prickles on a perfect fine still Wellington day!

The track will have a very gentle gradient, going slightly downhill to the Zac's end. Or, gently uphill to the Aratihi end.

It should be largely protected from the weather as it runs into a sheltered valley which is very cool. There are a few native trees and ferns that we will navigate around with no problem.

One day there will be a track from Aratihi up to the summit, and there is plenty of room on a grassy flat by the road for a nice corner to link these together.

We found two large rocks which we will machine through, and the rest should be relatively straight forward to make.

Tuesday night digs will be starting very soon, so keep an eye out, and be part of the fun creating this new track :-)

Cheers,
The Summit Tracks Project at Makara Peak

Welcome to the Summit Tracks Blog.

This will be full of news and views of the new tracks being built on and about the Summit of Makara Peak, in 2011/2012.

As presented at our Annual General Meeting, there will be new tracks built, changes to existing tracks, and more options to stay off the road and out of the weather.

The first of these to be built will start from Zac's Track, and meet up across the road from Aratihi.
It will be about 200 m long and be of a gentle gradient.

The second will be an intermediate downhill track from the Summit, to arrive across the road from North Face. This will be about 420 m long, and has been carefully designed to be as much fun as possible.

The third main track will be from Aratihi to the summit, avoiding the road and a lot of the weather.

We will also building a few short linkage tracks so they all join up in a sensbile way.

Like North Face, JFK and Smokin, this track will initially be built on Tuesday evenings, which are very social events where heaps of people roll up for a bit of a dig, good times and a feed.

Please keep a track on our website, and Facebook for news and updates !
